Monday Nov. 7 Online Class Assignment

Claim: If an employer is looking for an employee with "good problem solving skills", he/she is is looking for someone with analytical skills.

Reason: Having analytical skills would mean that the person has the ability to solve both complex and simple problems. Their solution would most likely be more accurate then someone using common sense because they have actually learned how to do those types of things specifically. Having common sense just means you may know some things from a personal experience, which is not always good. You need someone who is rather more logical and put their feelings aside, which I think is analytical.

Warrant: The fact that some jobs require more specific knowledge means that they are looking for someone who has more analytical skills rather than common sense.

Discussion Prompt #8

1.
a.) I have not had that experience but I have a friend who went through this experience. Spanish was her natural language and what was spoken in her household. She was never really comfortable with the English language. She always felt insecure and thought she would say something wrong.

b.) I could greatly compare the experience of speaking one language and another at school to the idea of me having to the language pretaining to my career field. That is so because nursing requires a whole new language that is not normally spoken in my home. There will be a lot of terms for me to process and can be a hard thing to do because I am so use to the way I normally speak at home. But it must be learned becuase it will be the only way I can succeed in that career field.

c.)Yes, it will be important in my career field. It will be important because others will be using the language and you must be able to know what they are talking about. In the hospital they use very specific terms that I would not normally hear or use in my household. That means that I must really get into learning it because I will have to communicate with others in a totally different way than which I am use to doing.

2.
a.)Yes, families do change as the children grow up. They change because as the kids get other they find different things tha appeal to them rather than what their family does. They learn new things and meet new people that help them develop into themselves. No, success is never attainable without a scarafice. We all had to give up something we love or enjoyed for better reasons. If scarafices were not made many people would not be in the great positions that they are in now.

b.) Yes, you can have intimacy with language in academic disciplines and career fields that would be fulfilling. You can have intimacy with the language depending how strongly you feel or care a bout your career. Also if you strongly feel for the thing in which you will be using the language to do.

c.) I do not feel that Rodriguez feels like the scarafice was worth it. I think he does not feel that way because of the way he felt when he heard some people speaking Spanish. He felt like it brought him back to his childhood days and all he could do was smile.

Discussion Prompt #7

Im doing my rhetorical analysis on the essay, "Education in a Multicultural Society: Our Future's Greatest Challenge," by Lisa D. Delpit. Delpit's purpose for writing this essay is to bring everyone's attention the difficulty educators have educating diverse students. For her background she use personal encounters to show how students of different cultures had to be taught differently.

Delpit's audience is teachers and prospective teachers. This purpose is to instill information into them on how to become better educators.

The text is basically telling teachers that they need to see things and do not consider how the students sees things. The tools that were used to make the text were personal experiences of Delpit.

This essay takes occurs in todays society. It takes place in various places across the United States.

"On Self-Respect" by Joan Didion

1.) The allusions that Didion uses that related to literature could have a negative and positive effect on the reader. It could have a negative effect because some readers may not have read the books that she is using as an example. It could be positive because if the readers are familiar with the books they will be able to get a better understanding of what Didion is saying. It can be both helpful and non helpful, it just depends on the person's understanding of what Didion is trying to explain. On the other hand I do not find it to be alienating at all.
2.) Didion stated "self-respect is something that our grandparents, whether or not they had it, knew all about." "Although the careless, suicidal Julian English in Appointment in Samarra and the careless, incurably dishonest Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby seem to equally improbable candidates for self-respect, Jordan Baker had it, Julian English Did not." I think these two statements are based on assumptions that people would generally agree with. Personally I think that it takes a very courageous person to ask for forgiveness no matter what their wrong doing was because they are acknowledging to everyone that they were wrong. Your character becomes ruin whenever you make certain mistakes but you are able to regain you character when people notice you are asking for forgiveness.
3.) Those statements are connected to building writing skills because you have to be very disciplined in order to write well and she classifies discipline as a sign of self-respect. You have to be properly trained and develope writing skills over time. You cant neccessarily take that you are a great writer because it will show in the quality of your work.

Discussion Prompt #4

I think that passage applies to men as well as it did to women in many ways. In my opinion I think it applies to everyone because we all try to take the easy way when doing things sometimes. In some way or form we have all let someone else think for us. This passage is basically telling everyone in general what it means to be responsible of themself. I think so because both men and women sometimes have a hard time at finding their place in life and what she is stating fits both genders.
I think what Rich meant by the "ethical and intellectual contract" that exist between teacher and student was that teachers should try to look at every aspect of their students and try to get them to their full potential. I think it means that they should try see students views on things and understand where they are coming from. At the same time, in this contract students are agreeing to aim for the best and try to obtain as much knowledge possible from their teachers. Ethical and intellectual goes well together because the ethical part has to do with how important knowledge is to you and the intellecutal part is how you plan to use that given knowledge.

Discussion Prompt #3

1.)      I read an assignment about 4 times for a paper before I begin writing my first draft. The benefit you could receive by reading the assignment is a better understanding of what is needed for you to do. I read the assignment once again after to make sure I have completed all aspects of the paper.
2.)      I can apply the "Consider the Evidence" information to the drafting assignment of an Argument from Personal Experience paper to construct a wonderful concept to help me put personal experiences into my paper. I would be better if I use my own personal experience because would be able to vouch for myself with my feelings.
3.)       The most useful information I got from the "Academic Writing is an Analysis" was how to pin-point important things for thr topic. I learned that those things will help me be more explainatory in my paper.
4.)       The section "Three Characteristics of Academic Writing" and the Rubric both give me the tools needed for me to complete a proper paper. They are different by the information need for their outlines. One requires more specific details. The Rubric goes into more depth and is more specific about the information required in order for my paper to be successful.

Discussion Prompt #2

My definition of homemade is something that someone has taken their time to make although it can be brought from a store. Sometimes homemade things can be very good and more valuable but other times they could be bad. For example, one of your friends knits you a sweater for you birthday, you would greatly appreciate it because that person put their hard work into making it. You would value that sweater more because it was made with love. A bad example would be if you tried to build your own bike. Sure you might know all the parts required to put the bike together but you won't know for certain if it would work properly rather than if you brought one from a store. I can't think of anyone off-hand who has educated themselves but I feel that they would appreciate their education more than someone who went to school.
Malcolm X related these concepts in his work because he saw knowledge as the greatest form of freedom. I think that he felt even though people weren't physically free, if they were educated, they would always be free. I think he felt that becuase by them being educated they had the chance to have their own opinions and ideas about the world. The only contrast I think the two have was the fact that Malcolm didn't need a classroom to educate himself, he used all his resources around him.
If I were locked up in jail, the subject that I'd be passionate enough about to pursue would be English. My goals for my life once released would be to continue to read and futher my education. I would want to write things that would help others learn and inspire them.

The Effect of College on Basic Writers

This reading really made me think a lot about what type of writer I am. However, I feel that there would be great benefits if i was to draft my paper with my own world view leading my thought process. I think that by me being allowed to use my own thought process will give me the opportuity to really voice my opinions. I also think that another benefit would be that I may be able to make others think differently about something they thought was right all along. You maybe could make someone else see things from your point of view.
In many ways I do agree with Bizzell when she stated that the academic world view cannot coexist with other world views. I agree with her because it can be really difficult for someone to think two ways about one thing. Eventually the person will give in to one world view completely. I also agree with her because sometimes the views of two things can conflict with one another. However, I can also argue that students can keep their original world views during and after their education. I can argue that because the student could take things from both worlds and combine them. I think that by the student knowing both world views it will give them greater knowledge on the world alltogether.
