My definition of homemade is something that someone has taken their time to make although it can be brought from a store. Sometimes homemade things can be very good and more valuable but other times they could be bad. For example, one of your friends knits you a sweater for you birthday, you would greatly appreciate it because that person put their hard work into making it. You would value that sweater more because it was made with love. A bad example would be if you tried to build your own bike. Sure you might know all the parts required to put the bike together but you won't know for certain if it would work properly rather than if you brought one from a store. I can't think of anyone off-hand who has educated themselves but I feel that they would appreciate their education more than someone who went to school.
Malcolm X related these concepts in his work because he saw knowledge as the greatest form of freedom. I think that he felt even though people weren't physically free, if they were educated, they would always be free. I think he felt that becuase by them being educated they had the chance to have their own opinions and ideas about the world. The only contrast I think the two have was the fact that Malcolm didn't need a classroom to educate himself, he used all his resources around him.
If I were locked up in jail, the subject that I'd be passionate enough about to pursue would be English. My goals for my life once released would be to continue to read and futher my education. I would want to write things that would help others learn and inspire them.
I agree with you about homemade being more valuable than just buying something from a store. Anything would be more valuable and important to a person if someone took the time and effort to do it themselves for you. That shows that a person cares enough to do that.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that Malcolm X thought that people would be metaphorically free because of their good education. It doesn't always have to be a physical thing. It's just how you view things yourself because of the knowledge you have.
I agree with you competely about the homemade things. I personally appreciate homemade things a little bit more. It's not that I don't appreciate the store bought things, but homemade things are much more personal.
ReplyDeleteI also think that Malcolm X was right when he said that education gave us freedom. He was thinking very wisely. He may have been in a jail cell, but he made himself an even better person when he chose to educate himself.
I, myself, would also focus on english if I were in a jail cell. I plan on becoming a journalist, so that would be how I would choose to educate myself.
Great example on the homemade gifts. Some gifts are best left for the professionals. Also, I did find it strange that people who educate themselves are more appreciative than those who do go to school.
ReplyDeleteI agree about Malcolm X use of resources. It must have been difficult, but he manage to use what he needed and learned from it.
